Ighamaouen

Ighamaouen, les Forteresses-Greniers Collectifs du parc culturel Touat Gourara Tidikelt is part of the Tentative list of Algeria in order to qualify for inclusion in the World Heritage List.
The Ighamouen of the Gourara-Touat-Tidikelt Cultural Park are 6 fortified granaries that showcase human ingenuity in adapting to the harsh Saharan environment. Built from the 10th century onward, they served to protect resources, organize communities, and secure trans-Saharan trade routes. Their architecture, combining earth and stone, demonstrates mastery of climate-adapted construction, with strategic layouts and defensive features. Integrated into the landscape, they reflect efficient resource management. Beyond their defensive and economic roles, these structures supported a unique territorial system, linking communities through solidarity and economic exchange between North and Sub-Saharan Africa.
